Teachers of the PSJA School District in San Juan, Texas, enjoyed their SOAR training in June 2004.
UPCOMING WORKSHOPS
July 9, 9am-3pm - "Scoping Out Wildlife" at the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans
The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is proud to announce a new partnership with LSU and SOAR that will allow the Aquarium to offer New Orleans area teachers access to SOAR kits. The kits contain a Scope-On-A-Rope as well as biofacts (shark skin, shells, feathers, etc.) for students to explore with the SOAR. Teachers who attend will become certified to use the scope and can check out a kit from the Aquarium for use with their students!
There is a fee of $10 for this workshop. Payment and registration in advance is required. To register, please call 504-378-2665.
July 23, 9-11am -
"SOARing Through Math - Elementary" Workshop at LRCE in Baton Rouge
In this workshop, you will learn how to use Scope-On-A-Rope (SOAR) to improve your students’ measuring skills and to teach concepts such as magnification and scale. SOAR is a wonderful tool that can be used to measure the length of small items, such as ants and salt crystals, and to compute area – all from your television! The new GLE’s require students to hone their measuring skills as early as kindergarten and the activities in this workshop are easily adaptable to any level. [Participants should have prior experience with SOAR.]
For more information and to register, contact the LRCE at 225-924-7600 or 1-800-449-1908.
Registration information is also available on their website, http://www.lrce.org.
July 23, 1-3pm - "SOARing Through Math - Middle/High" Workshop at LRCE in Baton Rouge
This workshop will show you how this instrument can be used to measure small objects such as salt crystals, sand grains and insects, to compute these objects’ volume and surface area, and to teach your students unit conversions. Using a Scope-On-A-Rope (SOAR) in your math class will help you meet the new GLE’s while your students have fun! By capturing their interest with beautifully magnified images, the learning is sure to follow. [Participants should have prior experience with SOAR.]
For more information and to register, contact the LRCE at 225-924-7600 or 1-800-449-1908.
