Scope-on-a-Rope is available for loan to Louisiana educators.

Qualifications for Use of the Scope-on-a-Rope:

Any Louisiana teacher involved with science curriculum in a public, private, or parochial K-12 school within the state, or an administrator wishing to promote science education within his/her school, is eligible to request use of the instrument.

Other individuals or groups who are eligible to check out the instrument include people involved in science camps, museum student activities, and others involved with teaching science to K-12 students, though not formally associated with a Louisiana school.

We have established several different ways to make the Scope-on-a-Rope available to Louisiana K-12 students. Among these methods are:

  1. An individual teacher (or qualified other) may request use of the scope. That person would meet with a member of the LSU staff to receive instruction on care and use of the scope. The individual teacher is responsible for the instrument while it is in his/her possession. He/She may take the scope into a colleague’s classroom, but not lend it to another teacher. The teacher is also responsible for returning the scope at the prearranged time.
  2. A group of teachers within a school may request a more formal workshop, during which the scope is demonstrated and samples lesson plans are discussed. The scope will be loaned to this group of teachers for a sufficient length of time to allow all involved to use the instrument in their classrooms for a time. Only teachers who have participated in the workshop may use the scope. Return dates will be prearranged.
  3. We are willing to discuss other loan options on an individual basis.
Contact Adrienne Lopez, LSU SOAR Coordinator, for more information on the lending program or to schedule a workshop. For technical or application questions, and R&D, contact Cindy Henk, Research Associate in the Socolofsky Microscopy Center. For further information on LSU’s HHMI program, contact Sheri Wischusen, HHMI Program Coordinator.

In return for use of the SOAR, we require completion of a short questionnaire on student demographics and participation, and request any input individual teachers may have toward lesson plans.

All scheduling for the Scope-on-a-Rope lending program is done through Adrienne Lopez, SOAR Coordinator:
